Seven holes pierce the lid in a cluster, designed to allow heat to rise from what would have been a coal container inside. The Hindeloopen painting tradition dates to the 17th century, when the town's sailors brought home influences from Scandinavia and the East, and the style became one of the most distinctive in Dutch folk art.
