The Road To CalvaryA small early 19th century oil on canvas depicting Christ carrying the cross as he trudges towards Calvary. Hes flanked by soldiers as two dogs bark fiercely at a bare chested man holding the rope that binds him. This may be Simon of Cyrene who was recruited from the crowd. Condition Artwork in good overall condition with two very tidy repairs

It could be cleaned but we prefer it as it is

Several figures are desperately clinging onto a small boat that’s partially submerged amid wild waters

Durozé studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) and exhibited at the illustrious Paris Salon from around 1910

during the early part of the 18th century

These include the fact that it lacks an appropriate level of craquelure for a piece so old and also canvases were quite rare in the 16th-century

The painting is signed ‘M Powell’ and dated in the lower right

and later became a teacher at the Berlin Art School

It dates to around 1765 when this simple style was common in the United States and England
